Van White Front Stairs Case Study

Share Post:

Situation:

This was a project taken over by a builder who went out of business. The previous stairs were not built correctly. The first set up to the landing has a 7 ¾” rise spaced evenly. The second set from the landing has a 7 ¾” rise spaced evenly until the very top step, where it is an 8 ¼” rise.

Problem:

Starting with the first set of stairs, once the ½” flooring is installed it will make the very bottom step have a 7 ¼” rise and the landing have a 8 ¼” rise. The second set of stairs will also have a 7 ¼” rise on the bottom step with a 8 ¾” rise on the top step.

Things to be considered:

An inexpensive solution is necessary because the homeowner is already spending more than expected fixing other problems from the previous builder. This means that the stairs can’t be totally rebuilt or changed in such a way that would add any more time than needed.

Potential Solutions:

To space the first set of stairs out to an even rise, each step on the first set would have to be 7 5/8”. For the second set to be spaced correctly each step would have to be 7 9/16”. Each of these numbers are just barely over 7 ½” but the smallest measurements matter.
